Biomass at LEAG
As a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, biomass is becoming increasingly important for the energy supply of the future. As an efficient biomass fuel, wood pellets offer a carbon-neutral and environmentally friendly source of heat. Their availability and low emissions make them a key component of future energy solutions.
High-quality wood pellets for green heating
With four production sites for climate-friendly wood pellets in Germany, the LEAG Group has an outstanding portfolio of fuels derived from renewable biomass. The LEAG Group’s German biomass operations include wood pellet production sites in Wismar, Schwedt, Oranienbaum and Löbau, employing a total of 168 people and producing 450,000 tonnes of wood pellets annually.
Pellets are small, cylindrical compressed fuel units that can be used particularly efficiently and conveniently in modern heating systems. The combustion of pellets is considered carbon-neutral, meaning that when burned they release only the amount of CO₂ previously absorbed by the tree during its growth. Switching to wood pellets actively helps to reduce emissions from fossil fuels sources.

Wood energy in its most efficient form
Wood pellets have a diameter of 6 mm and a length of up to four centimetres. They are compressed under high pressure – without any chemical binders – and have an extremely low moisture content as well as a high energy content and calorific value. No trees are felled specifically for wood pellets. Only wood waste and by-products from sawmills and timber harvesting are used as raw materials for pellet production. These are sourced regionally from controlled and reliable sources in the vicinity of our sites.
With around 750,000 pellet heating systems installed in Germany, the use of wood pellets has been tried and tested for many years and is technically highly efficient. Whether for a detached house, a large property or a manufacturing business: wood pellets offer an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels and, thanks to intelligent system solutions, can be used in a wide range of applications.
High-quality wood pellets
Wood pellets are a standardised fuel. The quality requirements are defined in the international standard ISO 17225-2. The ENplus certification system guarantees compliance with the standard and ensures ongoing monitoring. We are pioneers in Germany in certifying our pellet plants according to the criteria of the Sustainable Biomass Programme (SBP). This means we also meet the high requirements of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II/III) regarding the sustainability of biomass for use in larger combustion plants. With our range of pellets, we offer reliable fuel solutions for every application – from domestic pellet stoves to industrial combustion plants.
