Energy generation and infrastructure

Sites full of energy

LEAG is transforming its sites into integrated energy and industrial hubs for the future. Discover our energy sources and technologies – and how traditional energy regions are gradually evolving into diverse energy locations.

LEAG has a broad portfolio of generation assets. It ranges from mining and conventional power plants to a growing renewables business and forward-looking energy technologies. We invest in state-of-the-art wind and photovoltaic installations, large-scale battery storage systems, flexible gas-fired power plants and future H2-ready facilities.

All these components come together in our GigawattFactory – a concept for a reliable integrated supply system that will make electricity from solar and wind available around the clock. In addition, we produce fuels from refined lignite and sustainable biomass, particularly wood pellets. After coal mining, recultivation creates multifunctional landscapes on former mining land.

Energy region

With Germany’s phased exit from coal-fired power generation, which is set to be completed by the end of 2038, traditional mining regions such as Lusatia are undergoing profound change.

We want to help shape this process constructively – with expertise, investment and new ideas. In doing so, long-term prospects can emerge around energy and industrial solutions that secure value creation and create new opportunities. One example is the development of wind and solar power projects on recultivated post-mining land near Cottbus, Peitz, Spremberg and Weißwasser in Lusatia.

Sites and technologies

Our regional focus is on eastern Germany. In the Lusatian mining region in southern Brandenburg and north-eastern Saxony, we generate electricity, heat and solid fuels at several sites. We also have energy sites in the Central German mining region near Leipzig. We are using our land, infrastructure and expertise for new projects focused on the energy of tomorrow and the further development of our sites into integrated energy and industrial hubs.

In addition to our focus on eastern Germany, LEAG also operates a site in Leipheim, Bavaria. Internationally, we are active with pellet plants in Sweden and Latvia.

Energy generation today and tomorrow

From mining, conventional power plants and renewable energy to planned H2-ready backup power plants and storage facilities – our technologies reflect the full breadth of energy generation and supply at LEAG.

Once lignite extraction has ended, the land that has been used is recultivated, creating new landscapes for agriculture and forestry, energy use, nature conservation, leisure and recreation.

Energy-related products and services

Since 2007, we have used virtual power plants to remotely control, monitor and market energy assets. These energy services are also offered to external customers by LEAG’s subsidiary energy cubes GmbH. The portfolio ranges from direct marketing, PPAs and Redispatch 2.0 for renewable energies to electricity marketing for battery operators and the optimisation of energy plant utilisation.

Industrial Services

The transformation is also being driven by LEAG Group’s subsidiaries, growing strategically and operating independently within their respective segments. Together, they strengthen our regional foundation and broaden LEAG’s technological portfolio.
